Pine Ave. to become greener, safer for pedestrians and cyclists!

12 Mar 2020

Montreal's executive committee approves $3.4-million contract for plans and specifications of a $59-million redo.

Pine Ave. east of Parc Ave. is going to get a major facelift.

“It will be greener, safer, more user-friendly and very Montreal,” said Éric Alan Caldwell, the executive committee member responsible for urban planning and mobility.

The committee approved a $3.4-million contract for plans and specifications for the redesign on Wednesday.

The city has budgeted $59 million to redo Pine starting in 2021, according to its capital works program for 2020-2022.

The sewer that runs under it dates to 1895, and at street level the famous artery badly needs a facelift, Caldwell said.

“We will transform Pine Ave: many more trees, bigger planting holes for the trees, more space for pedestrians, wider sidewalks, a safer environment for pedestrians, protected bike lanes,” he said.

Montreal awarded the $3.4-million, four-year contract for professional services to the engineering firm FNX-INNOV Inc., which won out over four other bidders.

It covers plans, specifications and professional assistance for the first phase of the work, to be carried out on Pine between Parc and St-Denis St.

A second phase, not yet scheduled, will affect the section between Peel St. and Parc.

The street’s facelift will complement the redesign of the Parc-Pine interchange completed in 2008.

The objectives are to:

• make the street safer and more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists;

• add trees and greenery;

• enhance the street as a setting for significant buildings like the museum of the Hôtel-Dieu nuns and museum of the Fusiliers Mont-Royal;

• consolidate the street’s role as an access route to Mount Royal;

• upgrade underground infrastructure.

The project will be finalized by August, and plans and specifications for work between St-Denis and St-Laurent Blvd. will be drawn up by February 2021.

Work on that section will be carried out in 2021 and 2022.

Work on the section between St-Laurent and Parc will be done in 2022 and 2023.
