Jean Brillant St. in Côte-des-Neiges chosen for pedestrian project!
17 Jul 2019During the next three years, part of Jean Brillant St. in Côte-des-Neiges will be updated to better accommodate the pedestrians who walk it every day.
During peak season, the street that connects the Université de Montréal to the Côtes-des-Neiges métro station is used by up to 15,000 pedestrians on a daily basis, the borough estimates. During high traffic, that number can translate to 3,000 pedestrians per hour. Aside from the foot traffic generated by schools in the area, hospitals, community centres, shops and Saint Joseph’s Oratory also draw people.
The Jean Brillant St. plan is one of four pedestrian projects chosen by the city of Montreal for the fifth edition of Rues piétonnes et partagées, a program that has developed 15 pedestrian spaces since 2015. Boroughs are encouraged to submit ideas and the city selects a few to fund with the help of the respective boroughs.
According to a city press release, 67 per cent of Jean Brillant St. between Decelles Ave. and Côte-des-Neiges Rd. will be allocated to the pedestrian project. The one-way street will still be open to cars, and the borough is confident the development won’t interfere with traffic or local businesses.
